I photographed first time model Cayleigh on Saturday January 14, 2012. This 23 year old university student was a quick learner. By that I mean she remembered the dozens of tips I give new models, and by the end of the three hour shoot she was combining tips like a more experienced model. She asked if we could do a second shoot, which I agreed to. This morning she sent me the following email, which I think is one of the sweetest emails I have yet received from a subject after a shoot.

Kevin-
Thanks again for the amazing shoot. I am really happy with the results. You are a very talented photographer, and I appreciate your warmth and professionalism. I am willing to write you a very positive review for future models, and would love to work with you again. All in all, you rock!!

I love working with first time models. They are more appreciative of my work than seasoned pros, who become jaded and sometimes don’t even want a copy of the results on disc. I also like teaching models how to model, and I think I’ve gotten quite good at it given I’ve never had any training as a model, and they taught us almost nothing about the subject in school.

Starting with this post, I am publishing my photographs of models to a subdomain of my primary blog KevinWarnock.com. The URL of this photography blog is photography.KevinWarnock.com.

I am making this change because I have been told that these pictures of beautiful women are inappropriate on my main blog, and that I might be turning off some readers of my primary blog. I think the opposite is more likely, but I can see the point others are making.

My primary blog is more about my thinking and my ideas, and less about my photography.

I chose to create my photography blog as a subdomain so that my overall traffic is aggregated under just one Internet domain name.

Thank you to my friend Cayleigh for being the inaugural model featured at this new subdomain.

Click on the photographs to see them at full resolution of 21 megapixels. I shot these pictures with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 135 mm f:2.8 Canon soft focus lens set to sharp. I used the autofocus feature of the camera for the first time, and I was shocked at how good it is. I have been manually focussing this camera since I bought it years ago, and it turns out that I didn’t need to. My earlier Canon EOS 10D was not so good at automatically focussing, and I read reports of the 5D Mark II also being not good, so I never really experimented and learned how to use my new camera. The trick that made it work is that it’s critical to move the red square focus point to the area where the eyes will be in the final picture. When I did that, the results were astonishingly sharp, better than I can do even by manually bracketing my manual focussing. To all the models I’ve worked with over the years where you had to endure all those extra shots that were blurry due to my focus bracketing, I extend my sincere and heartfelt apologies. And to Canon I say “good job.” Sorry I’ve written not so nice things about your camera over on my primary blog.
